London Reaches for the Sky: London Gherkin [PHOTO]
Across the London skyline there are several protruding structures that make for an easily recognizable vista. “The Gherkin” is one of them. More officially it’s known as 30 St Mary Axe.
The density of internationally known symbols throughout this city is mind boggling. London’s urban landscape is unlike the skyscraper packed metropolises of North America; its tallest buildings are packed into just two main areas in “the city” and in Canary Wharf. You rarely get the feeling of being stuck in between “sky-blockers”, though a bit of that has been captured in the photo below.
Stepping out onto the main road, Whitechapel High Street, we could see the Gherkin of London City from our London neighborhood. It occurred to me one day, after living in London for too long to mention (too embarrassingly long to not have see all the major sights), that I hadn’t actually been up to it. So when I did finally go I thought I better get some nice shots. It’s harder than I thought!
